Since one of my goals for this year was to see Common Redpoll (done) and Red Crossbill in Baltimore County, I dedicated yesterday morning to finding a crossbill. I arrived at Soldiers Delight at 8 AM and headed for a location where several sightings have been logged: the open area off the southern end of the Serpentine Trail, just west of the powerline cut. As soon as I got beyond the pines I could see 7 chunky birds perched like ornaments in a young deciduous tree in the clearning, near the white "12" marker. I had beautiful scope views of three male and four female RED CROSSBILLS preening. Also got a brief bit of video before they suddenly flew, silently, down toward the powerline. I stayed a while longer and had several flyovers, but they were very high and I wasn't able to get a recording. If anyone is looking for a Baltimore County Red Crossbill, this might be a good spot to stake out early in the morning, given the consistency of sightings in this general area.
