This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, January 22, at
9:30 AM.

Top birds this week are TUFTED DUCK* and BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* in MD,
WESTERN GREBE* in VA, and DOVEKIE*, SAY'S PHOEBE* and BLACK-THROATED
GRAY WARBLER* in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, RED-NECKED GREBE, seabirds,
RED PHALAROPE, gulls, alcids, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, SNOW BUNTING,
warblers, crossbills, COMMON REDPOLL, and EVENING GROSBEAK.

The TUFTED DUCK* continued at Kent Narrows in Queen Anne's Co MD, with
sightings from the Mears Point Marina or Red Eye's Dock Bar through
the week. A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* was seen again as recently as Jan 21
at the Choptank River bridge in Cambridge MD (Talbot Co side). A drake
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* was found Jan 19 at The Elms Environmental
Education Center at the end of St. James Church Rd, St Mary's Co, MD;
the bird was swimming and diving with COMMON GOLDENEYES a half mile
north of the education center.
The WESTERN GREBES* at Lake Anna, Spotsylvania Co VA, were still
present as of Jan 21. A DOVEKIE* was spotted Jan 18 from Shell Rd,
Assateague SP, Worcester Co, MD, as it flew north, low over the water.

A SAY'S PHOEBE* was discovered Jan 19 near Keymar, Carroll Co, MD, in
the vicinity of Keysville Rd and Sixes Bridge Rd, and it was relocated
in the same general area Jan 20 and 21. A BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER*
that was glimpsed in a backyard in Silver Spring, Montgomery Co, MD on
Jan 9, and made another brief appearance on the morning of Jan 22.

Reports of ROSS'S GOOSE came from Selby's Landing, Prince George's Co,
MD, on Jan 16 and from Worcester Co, MD, on Jan 20, when one was
picked out of a flock of SNOW GEESE south of Public Landing, near the
intersection of Figgs Landing Rd and Bayside Rd. CACKLING GOOSE
sightings occurred near the bike path just north of Belle Haven Park,
Fairfax Co, VA on Jan 18 and 19, and at McMillan Reservoir, NW DC, on
Jan 18. A EURASIAN WIGEON continued at Dead Man's Cove, Loch Raven
Reservoir, Baltimore Co, MD, through Jan 20. Two EURASIAN WIGEONS were
seen along Prime Hook Rd, Prime Hook NWR, Sussex Co, DE, on Jan 19.
Another EURASIAN WIGEON remained at Swan Cove, Chincoteague NWR,
Accomack Co, VA on Jan 21. On Jan 19 a COMMON TEAL was hanging out
with 1100 GREEN-WINGED TEAL at Truitt's Landing In Worcester Co, MD. A
drake WHITE-WINGED SCOTER showed up at Little Seneca Reservoir on Rte
112 in Montgomery Co, MD, on Jan 15. That same day a BLACK SCOTER was
reported from Rocky Point Park, Baltimore, MD. In NW District of
Columbia, McMillan Reservoir hosted a pair of COMMON GOLDENEYES on Jan
15 and 18, and a female REDHEAD on Jan 18. A HARLEQUIN DUCK was
reported from the MD Transportation Authority�Patapsco River in
Baltimore on Jan 20. Three HARLEQUIN DUCKS continued at the Ocean City
Inlet, Worcester Co, MD, on Jan 20.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen from Fort Monroe, Hampton, VA, Assateague
Island National Seashore, Worcester Co, MD on Jan 18, 19, and 20.
A GOLDEN EAGLE flew over the Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Talbot
Co, MD, Jan 19. A GOLDEN EAGLE was observed at Figgs Landing,
Worcester Co, MD, Jan 20.
Highlights from a productive pelagic out of Virginia Beach, VA on Jan
19 included NORTHERN FULMAR, MANX SHEARWATER, RED PHALAROPE, and
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, as well as 47 DOVEKIES, 458 RAZORBILLS, and 8
ATLANTIC PUFFINS.

BONAPARTE'S GULLS showed up at several "in-town" locations: 10 at
Violette's Lock on the C&O Canal, Montgomery Co, MD, Jan 15; three at
Black Hill RP, Montgomery Co, MD, on Jan 21; and two at Beaverdam
Reservoir, Loudoun Co, VA, Jan 21. The BLACK-HEADED GULL continues
around the Hunt Valley Town Center, Baltimore Co, MD. A BLACK-HEADED
GULL visited the Wolfe Neck wastewater treatment plant in Sussex Co,
DE, on Jan 18. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL stopped by McMillan
Reservoir near Howard University in NW DC on Jan 18.

Second-cycle RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS continue in the area: one has
wintered in a yard in Harford Co, MD; one frequents a back yard in
North Beach, Calvert Co, MD at 9119 Bay Ave (visitors welcome);
another favors a home at Green Spring Garden Pk, Fairfax Co, VA, and a
pair has been visiting a yard in Amberly, Anne Arundel Co, MD. Yet
another Selasphorus hummingbird has been seen at a home in Snow Hill,
Dorchester Co, MD; contact Mark Hoffmann (<wcbirding...>).

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE* was seen Jan 15 on Candlewood Drive, Jefferson
Co, WV, on Jan 15. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found Jan 19 at Banshee Reeks
NP, Loudoun Co, VA.
Indian River Inlet, DE, has been hosting a flurry of SNOW BUNTINGS,
with at least 45 enjoyed Jan 20 at the campground on the south side.
Ft Smallwood Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD, hosted a single SNOW BUNTING
on Jan 15, as well as a COMMON REDPOLL on Jan 19 and 20.
A YELLOW WARBLER was spotted along the Haul Rd in Dyke Marsh, Fairfax
Co, VA on Jan 17, and a NASHVILLE WARBLER was found there Jan 17, 18,
and 20. On Jan 20 a NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen in Worcester Co, MD,
along the drive into E A Vaughn North along Taylor's Landing Rd.
RED CROSSBILLS, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, and COMMON REDPOLLS continued
to reward area birders, with reports from the Patuxent Research Refuge
North Tract, Anne Arundel Co, MD; Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE;
Assateague Island SP, Worcester Co, MD; Soldiers Delight Natural Area,
Baltimore Co, MD; Fort Smallwood, Anne Arundel Co, MD; Fort Howard,
Baltimore Co, MD; and Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, VA.
Somewhat west of our usual reporting area, at Dry Fork, Randolph Co,
WV, in the Monongahela NF, on Jan 19 a small flock of birders was
treated to a flock of 47 EVENING GROSBEAKS.
