*Position Description: Avian Biologist*

*Location: USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center,
Laurel, MD*

*Background:* IAP World Services, Inc. has an excellent opportunity for a
full-time Avian Biologist to perform contract work at the USGS Patuxent
Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD. IAP World Services is the on-site
technical services contractor and supports PWRC by hiring and managing
qualified individuals to support long and near-term research projects.



*Position Description: *This work will support the Bird Banding Laboratory
(BBL) at PWRC. BBL staff process approximately 1.5 million banding
records and 100,000 band encounter records annually, performing numerous
editing and quality control functions to ensure that these data meet
appropriate data quality standards. The selected candidate will provide
biological and mapping expertise that can be applied to the data management
processes of the BBL and maintain the overall quality of the bird banding
and band encounter data used for research, management, and conservation of
migratory bird populations. Specific tasks include:

� Resolution of Encounter Location Errors: The BBL data management
system produces approximately 2,000 to 4,000 encounter location errors each
month during the hunting seasons (Sep � Mar)

� Process banding data: Bird banding data collected at the BBL�s
bird banding site must undergo quality control before final importation
into the BBL database. Quality control edits identify thousands of errors
each month

� Undertakes specific projects as assigned to improve the
efficiency of BBL operations and expand its data management capabilities



*Qualifications: *An undergraduate degree in ecology, biology, or other
appropriate discipline, with an emphasis on ornithology; master�s degree
preferred. Two years of directly applicable full-time professional
experience participating in ornithological projects. Demonstrable
experience with bird banding techniques and current protocols for the
identification, ageing, and sexing of birds in the hand. Working knowledge
of geographic coordinate systems and mapping products including Google
Earth and Google Maps and a working knowledge of ornithology and bird
distributions.
