I did the usual rounds to a couple of lakes in Montgomery county this morning. Blue Mash was completely frozen over and pretty quiet altogether. Lake Needwood kept some open water on the Southern End (enter from park side for good views). About 600 or so Canada Geese are about. I counted 9, which I consider strong candidates for CACKLINGs. They kept together in the small cluster for the entire time. Also 1 fem. CANVASBACK, 2 RING-BILLED and 1 RUDDY DUCK in the same area. On the Northern Side of the lake, right at the pullover I had 3 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES and 1 SWAMP SPARROW. Lake Needwood had only 2 Ring-billed Ducks and Mallards. I will put some half-decent pics of Canvasback and Cackling Geese on my blog later on.
Good birding!
