Subject: Re: [MDBirding] 2-3 Common Redpolls at Ft. Smallwood

Generally when hunters refer to ducks as bluebills yes they are referencing Scaup, some hunters will also refer to scaup as blackheads.

I finally was able to get to Ft. Smallwood this morning. Shortly after 7:30, I observed two chasing one another in a smallish tree near the maintenance compound. A little later, I found one with some American Goldfinch in a sweet gum along the walk by the pond, where the hawk watch is maintained. Finally, after many trips to Smallwood over many years chasing redpolls, I got some! No sign of crossbills. Also of note were five Tundra Swans near to shore in the bay.

No Harlie to be seen at Ft. Armistead, I think best was a hen Long-tailed Duck which materialized briefly. A party of duck hunters came in with a bag of Bufflehead and "bluebills," which I presume are scaup. One also reported shovelers on the other side of the that sort of peninsula to the left on the opposite side of the canal. But they did not appear for me.

Ft. Howard was DEAD, routine suspects only.

No sign of Black-headed Gull at Hunt Valley, and I even used bait.
