Subject: [MDBirding] C&O miles 39-42 B&W WARBLER

I birded from milepost 39 to milepost 42 (i.e., miles 39, 40, & 41) for
the C&O Canal Midwinter Count this morning, starting at 9 am. Best bird
by far was a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER seen around mile 39.5 at the end of
the side trail to the river. It was with Carolina Chickadees,
Golden-crowned Kinglets, and White-throated Sparrows. Seen first clinging
upside down on a branch near eye level, I got a good long (but slightly
obscured) look at close range with binoculars before it flew out of sight.
Black & white striped crown, black streaks on white below, long thin bill,
and white lores.

Other highlights included AMERICAN WIGEON, COMMON GOLDENEYE, BALD EAGLE
(adult + immature), HERRING GULL (flying upriver: gray mantle, black wing
tips, large yellow bill with red spot), EASTERN PHOEBE, HERMIT THRUSH, and
EASTERN TOWHEE. Carolina Wrens and White-throated Sparrows seemed to be
everywhere. The full tally over all 3 miles is below (43 species):
