Subject: [MDBirding] National Arboretum - WW Crossbills, Pine Siskin, Purple Finches, Chipping Sparrow

I spent nearly 4 hours hiking all around the arboretum today and came up with what seems like a big species list for January (46 species). The highlight was the continuing flock of White-winged Crossbills northwest of the grove of state trees flying around in the woods and feeding on hemlock cones. The flock seems to move around quite a bit (I even saw them flyng around later from Bladensburg road on the west edge of the arboretum), so patience may be required if you don't see/hear them right away.

Other highlights included:
Purple Finches - 2 females
Pine Siskin - 1 flyover
Chipping Sparrow - 1 with a big flock of juncos
Field Sparrow - 3
Red-breasted Nuthatches - 5
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 2
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 2
Hermit Thrush - 5
and hundreds of Juncos and White-throated Sparrows
