Okay, I'll admit we're spoiled -- our stretch of the towpath includes Violette's Lock, Riley's Lock (Seneca), and a known breeding area for Red-headed Woodpeckers. This year's Canal Count didn't disappoint. We saw a total of 42 species in the three miles, including all seven woodpeckers. Other highlights included Redhead, Eastern Phoebe (a pair), Hermit Thrush, and a delightful Winter Wren singing loudly and melodiously. Brown Creepers and Golden-crowned Kinglets were everywhere. Oddly, we tallied only a single Canada Goose.
