Today I heard Carolina Chickadees and the Cardinal singing, and the feeder is receiving the first blackbird invasion of the season, mostly Common Grackles with a few Red-winged Blackbirds.
Based on how warm it is supposed to be tomorrow, I expect that the witch hazel buds, which have cracked open and are showing yellow tips, will probably open fully tomorrow. The snowdrops have been blooming since the last warm spell a couple of weeks ago.
The moss in the front yard has bright green patches, and the yard smells of mud. I love a January thaw! I know it's going to get freezing cold again by Thursday, but I am really enjoying today and tomorrow, and it seems as though the birds are, too. Aside from the blackbirds, the feeder is all but deserted and I can hear little chip calls as the birds forage in the woods.
