This morning, February 2, 2013, there was a flock of White-winged Crossbills at the Fran Uhler Natural Area in Prince George's county north of Bowie. They were seen from the path paralleling the railroad tracks just north of the old parking lot (the access road is now gated well south of here). I counted 6 crossbills, all red adults with black and white wings and crossed bills, but the actual count was higher since Mike saw at least one yellow bird.
We watched them for perhaps ten minutes feeding on Sweet Gum seed balls. They were in the open but in less than ideal light. Then they flew across the path into a dense pine stand where the light was excellent but the birds, unfortunately, remained completely out of view.
