This morning I did some birding in Caroline County. There was quite a bit of snow on the ground and many back roads were still icey. The highlight was 3 SNOW BUNTINGS among a flock of close to 100 HORNED LARKS, on Dean Road near Ridgely, just south of Stevenson and opposite the horse track. The birds were very close to the road at times but I did not see any longspurs. Other good birds were WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW at the Ridgely ball fields, the continuing RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES and PURPLE FINCHES at Adkins Arboretum, and AMERICAN PIPITS and EASTERN MEADOWLARKS on Poplar Neck Road. The Choptank River at Kingston Landing and Choptank was mostly devoid of birds. Joel Martin Catonsville, MD
