This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, Feb. 5, at
11:00 AM.

Top birds this week are TUFTED DUCK* and BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* in MD,
WESTERN GREBE* in VA, NORTHERN LAPWING* in MD, THAYER'S GULL in MD,
WHITE-WINGED DOVE* in MD,and SAY'S PHOEBE* in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, GREAT CORMORANT, GOLDEN
EAGLE, SANDHILL CRANE, gulls including BLACK-HEADED and ICELAND,
RAZORBILL, EURASIAN-COLLARED DOVE, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, COMMON RAVEN,
LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, warblers, LARK SPARROW, WESTERN
TANAGER, crossbills and COMMON REDPOLL.

The female TUFTED DUCK* continued at Kent Narrows in Queen Anne's Co
MD, with sightings throughout the week.

The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* continues at the Choptank River bridge in
Cambridge MD (Talbot Co side) with reports as recently as Feb 4.

The WESTERN GREBES* at Lake Anna, Spotsylvania Co VA, were still
present as of Feb 2.

A NORTHERN LAPWING* was found and well-photographed on Feb 3 at the
southeast corner of Old Cordova Rd and Three Bridge Branch Rd near
Cordova, MD; it was seen again Feb 4 but flew away when a Peregrine
Falcon appeared.

Possible THAYER'S GULLS were reported in MD. One was reported from
Fort Armistead Park, Baltimore, MD on Feb 2 and the other, along with
a thorough description of a first winter bird, was seen Feb 4 at
Schoolhouse Pond, Upper Marlboro, Prince George's Co, MD.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE* was seen on Feb 1 and 2 at the Annmarie Sculpture
Garden & Arts Center, Dowell Road, Solomons, Calvert Co, MD.

The SAY'S PHOEBE* near Keymar, Carroll Co, MD, in the vicinity of
Keysville Rd and Sixes Bridge Rd, was seen again with reports from
January 30.

The six GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at Lock Raven primary dam,
Baltimore Co, MD were seen throughout the week. CACKLING GEESE were
reported from a number of locations throughout the region. A TRUMPETER
SWAN, first reported in early Jan on the Shenandoah River near
Watermelon Park, Clarke Co, VA, was seen again on Jan 29 and Feb 2.
The EURASIAN WIGEON at Pohick Bay Regional Park, Fairfax Co, VA was
seen again throughout the week. EURASIAN WIGEONS continue to be seen
along Prime Hook Beach Road at the Prime Hook NWR. A COMMON EIDER was
seen Feb 2 at Indian River Inlet, Sussex Co., DE. Three HARLEQUIN
DUCKS were seen Feb 3 at the south end of the East Jetty in the Ocean
City, MD Inlet. A HARLEQUIN DUCK was also seen on Jan 29 at the MD
Transportation Authority, Patapsco River, Baltimore, MD and another on
Feb 3 from the North Beach Fishing Pier, Calvert Co, MD.

Six GREAT CORMORANTS were found Feb 2 at the Indian River Inlet.

The GOLDEN EAGLE at the Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Talbot Co, MD,
was seen throughout the week. One was also seen on Feb 3 at Lambs
Meadow Rd, MD Rte 298, Kent Co, MD.

The SANDHILL CRANE in Calvert Co, MD continued to be seen with reports
through Feb 3 at Hunting Creek Rd. and Deep Landing Rd in Huntingtown.

The BLACK-HEADED GULL continues to be seen at the Hunt Valley Towne
Centre, Baltimore Co, MD, with the most recent report from Feb 4.
ICELAND GULLS were seen at a couple locations this past week including
one at Fowler Beach Rd, Prime Hook NWR, Sussex Co, DE and another on
Jan 30 along Windhaven Ln, Fauquier Co, VA. In MD one was seen during
the week at the Annapolis Junction Trash Transfer Station, Jessup, MD.
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were reported from several locations this
past week.

A RAZORBILL was among the several interesting birds found at Indian
River Inlet, Sussex Co, DE, during an ANS trip to the coast on Feb 2.

Ten EURASIAN-COLLARED DOVES were seen Jan 29 along Magotha Road in
Northampton Co, VA while one was seen Feb 4 in South Boston, Halifax
Co, VA.

RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS continued to be seen visiting feeders throughout
the week in the area: one continues at Green Spring Garden Park in
Alexandria, VA,; another in Amberley, Anne Arundel Co, MD; and still
another in North Beach, Calvert Co, MD.

COMMON RAVENS continue to be found on the coastal plain with sightings
at Oxbow Lake, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Jan 31; Soldier's Delight,
Baltimore Co, MD the same day; and in two different locations in King
George's Co, VA on Feb 3.

Over the weekend six LAPLAND LONGSPURS were found among a flock of
Horned Larks on Leverage Rd off of Rte 544 in Queen Anne's Co, MD.
LAPLAND LONGSPURS were also mixed in with Horned Larks on Feb 3 near
the intersection of Rte 85, Buckeystown Pike, and Oland Road,
Frederick Co, MD. LAPLAND LONGSPURS and SNOW BUNTINGS were found Feb 3
and 4 in a large flock of Horned Larks on the south side of Sparks Rd
about 200 yards west of its junction with Dean Rd, Caroline Co, MD.
Approximately 50 SNOW BUNTINGS were found Feb 2 in the south jetty
parking lot at Delaware's Indian River Inlet. Three SNOW BUNTINGS were
found Feb 2 among a flock of close to 100 Horned Larks on Dean Rd near
Ridgely, Caroline Co, MD, just south of Stevenson and opposite the
horse track. SNOW BUNTINGS were seen Feb 3 and 4 on the beach at 84th
St, Virginia Beach, VA.

Several warbler species continued to be seen at and near Dyke Marsh,
Fairfax Co, VA this past week including Tennessee, Orange-crowned, and
Nashville.

A LARK SPARROW continues to be seen in Chesterfield, VA with the most
recent sighting on Feb 3.

A WESTERN TANAGER was seen Feb 1 at Settler's Mill, James City, VA.

Sightings of RED and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continued this past week
with reports from the National Arboretum, DC; Soldier's Delight
Natural Area, Baltimore Co, MD; Fran Uhler Natural Area, Prince
George's Co, MD; and Resthaven Memorial Cemetery, Frederick Co, MD.
Two COMMON REDPOLLS were seen throughout the week at the CHESPAX
office feeders, King's Landing Park, Huntingtown, Calvert Co, MD.

This week's reports have been gleaned from the MDBirding, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers, and eBird
records.
