Subject: [MDBirding] Ho Co - White-winged Crossbills

Birders,

Dena and I were on our afternoon neighborhood walk along
North Ridge Rd in Ellicott City about 3:30 pm when we saw movement just off the
sidewalk. I looked down expecting Juncos
but to my surprise we had 6 White-winged Crossbills feeding on sweet gum balls right at
our feet. One was an adult male and the rest females or juveniles.
We watched for a few minutes
and then eased away and scampered home for binocs and camera. This location is on N Ridge Rd, just east of
a driveway to a medical building marked by a blue sign 2850 North Ridge. There is a piece of black plastic in the lawn
next to the sidewalk where first located.
When we returned about 3:45 pm they were gone but we found them
again in the back of the medical building parking lot feeding on tamarack cones. The tamarackwas right next to the stop sign in
the back of the lot. Please note that
one cannot proceed further as the road beyond that is the Heartlands assisted
living facility and is marked No trespassing.
We live in the neighborhood and know they do enforce this.
Please note this segment of N Ridge must be accessed by
taking Rogers Rd north from the intersection with US 40, then turning onto
North Ridge. It cannot be accessed from
the intersection of North Ridge and US 40 one traffic light west as that
segment (which leads to Walmart) does not yet go through.
I will be sending pictures to the Howard County web site.
