Subject: [MDBirding] American Woodcocks in Montgomery County

Hi everybody:

I left work promptly at 5 PM today and headed out River Road for some
"before dark" birding. I carefully scanned the fields from Poole's store
all the way out to Hughes Rd in hopes of spotting the Sandhill Crane that
Jared Fisher passed on to us earlier today but I did not have any luck in
relocating the bird.

I drove up Hughes Rd. and found nothing on the polo fields. On my return
trip down the road a MERLIN flew out of the cedars along the side of the
road.

I spent 20 minutes at Hughes Hollow which was relatively quiet. There were
5 REDWINGED BLACKBIRDS perched in trees and singing from time to time. I
saw 3 HOODED MERGANSERS and had two pair of WOOD DUCKS fly over the
impoundments and announce themselves as they headed down into the furthest
western impoundment for the night.

My last stop was along Sycamore Landing Rd just south of the River Rd
intersection. As soon as I stepped out of the car at 5:55 pm I immediately
heard several "peents" from both sides of the road. for the next 10 minutes
I heard mostly "peenting" and also had two different AMERICAN WOODCOCKS fly
around and practice their full display. I heard my last evidence of them at
6:11 pm. They were my target bird although due to the damp and colder
weather I was not really expecting to hear them.

Off work tomorrow and headed to Caroline County...
