This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, Feb. 12, at
7:00 AM.

Top birds this week are BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* in MD, WESTERN GREBE* in
VA and MD, and BULLOCK'S ORIOLE* in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, EARED GREBE, RED-NECKED
GREBE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, SANDHILL CRANE, gulls,
RAZORBILL, SHORT-EARED OWL, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, SNOW BUNTING,
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, crossbills and COMMON
REDPOLL.
The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* continues at the Choptank River bridge in
Cambridge MD (Talbot Co side) with reports as recently as Feb 10.

The WESTERN GREBES* at Lake Anna, Spotsylvania Co VA, were still
present as of Feb 6. A WESTERN GREBE* was seen at Skimmer Island,
Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD on Feb 10.

An immature male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE* came to a feeder in Harford Co, MD
on Feb 11; check on the MDbirding list-serve for access information.
Up to six GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at Lock Raven primary dam,
Baltimore Co, MD were seen throughout the week. Three GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were found on ponds at the intersection of Belvoir
and Harrison Rds, Fauquier Co, VA on Feb 5 and 6. Perhaps the same
birds were seen on Atoka Rd in Fauquier Co on Feb 10. A ROSS'S GOOSE
was along Bear Swamp Rd, Kent Co, DE on Feb 7. Another ROSS'S GOOSE
was seen on Church Rd, south of Milford, Sussex Co, DE on Feb 10.
CACKLING GEESE were reported from a number of locations throughout the
region including the intersection of Harrison and Belvoir Rds in
Fauquier Co; Piney Run Park, Carroll Co, MD; Hains Point, Washington,
DC; and Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA. The EURASIAN WIGEON at Pohick Bay
Regional Park, Fairfax Co, VA was seen again throughout the week.
EURASIAN WIGEONS continue to be seen along Prime Hook Beach Road at
Prime Hook NWR and at the Port Mahon Rd impoundments of the Little
Creek WMA, Sussex Co, DE. An EURASIAN WIGEON was in a cove near
Peerce's Restaurant, Loch Raven Reservoir on Feb 10 and 11. An
EURASIAN WIGEON was found in the Assawoman WMA, Sussex Co, DE on Feb
9. The Eurasian form of GREEN-WINGED TEAL, also known as COMMON TEAL,
was seen on Oxbow Lake, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Feb 9, 10, and 11. A
COMMON EIDER was seen Feb 7 and 10 at Indian River Inlet, Sussex Co.,
DE. Another COMMON EIDER and a HARLEQUIN DUCK were seen from the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, Northampton Co, VA on Feb 10.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was found at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on
Feb 10. An EARED GREBE was in Indian River Inlet on Feb 9 and 10.

A possible NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen at 3rd and F Sts NW, Washington,
DC on Feb 8. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew near Savannah Rd, Kent Co, DE on
Feb 10. Another NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen over River Rd in McKee
Beshers WMA, Montgomery Co, MD on Feb 11. Two GOLDEN EAGLES flew over
Mary Morris Rd, Kent Co, MD on Feb 9.

The SANDHILL CRANE in Calvert Co, MD continued to be seen with reports
through Feb 10 at Hunting Creek Rd. and Deep Landing Rd in
Huntingtown. A SANDHILL CRANE was found near McKee-Beshers WMA along
River Road, Montgomery Co, MD on Feb 7 and 11.

The BLACK-HEADED GULL continues to be seen at the Hunt Valley Towne
Centre, Baltimore Co, MD, with the most recent report from Feb 7.
ICELAND GULLS were seen in several locations this past week including
a first winter bird at Wharf Rd, Prince Georges Co, MD on Feb 6; a
juvenile at North East Town Park, Cecil Co, MD on Feb 7; a first
winter bird at the Annapolis Junction Recycle and Transfer Station,
Jessup, MD on Feb 7 and 8; and an adult at Fowler Beach Rd, Prime Hook
NWR, Sussex Co, DE on Feb 10. A first year GLAUCOUS GULL was found at
the Annapolis Junction Recycle and Transfer Station on Feb 11; it was
seen in both Howard and Anne Arundel Cos.

Birders enjoyed RAZORBILLS at several spots including 5 at Indian
River Inlet on Feb 10 and one there on Feb 7; one at the Chesapeake
Bay Bridge-Tunnel on Feb 10; and one in the Ocean City Inlet,
Worcester Co, MD on Feb 9 and 10.

Five SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen at the intersection of Livick and
Cattleman Rds, Augusta Co, VA on Feb 9. SHORT-EARED OWLS were also
spotted on Harrison Rd and Rectortown Rd, Fauquier Co, VA on Feb 10.

RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS continued to visit feeders throughout the week in
the area: one continues at Green Spring Garden Park in Alexandria,
VA,; another in Amberley, Anne Arundel Co, MD; another in North Beach,
Calvert Co, MD; and single birds in James City and York, VA.

Approximately 50 SNOW BUNTINGS were found Feb 7 and 10 at Indian River
Inlet.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER continues between Dyke Marsh and the stone
bridge in Fairfax Co, VA. AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were found in several
areas including Kenilworth Park, Washington, DC on Feb 9 and 10;
Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co, VA on Feb 9; and Banshee Reeks,
Loudoun Co, VA on Feb 9.

Up to 13 RED CROSSBILLS were seen on Feb 6 and 7 at the North Tract,
Patuxent Research Refuge, Anne Arundel Co, MD. RED CROSSBILLS were
also seen at the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area, Howard Co, MD on
Feb 10; at Cape henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE on Feb 10; and in Botetourt
Co, VA on Feb 9.

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continued this past week with reports from
Soldier's Delight Natural Area, Baltimore Co, MD on Feb 9 and 10; Fran
Uhler Natural Area, Prince George's Co, MD on Feb 7; North Ridge Rd,
Ellicott City, Howard Co, MD on Feb 7 and 9; Resthaven Memorial
Cemetery, Frederick Co, MD on Feb 10; North Tract of Patuxent Refuge
on Feb 10 and 11; St Mary's Co, MD on Feb 9; Preston, Caroline Co, MD
on Feb 10; Whiskey Bottom North Apts, Howard Co, MD on Feb 11; north
Laurel, Howard Co, MD on Feb 11; western Harford Co, MD on Feb 11; and
the Maryland Building at the Maryland Zoo, Baltimore, MD on Feb 7, 8,
and 11.

As many as three COMMON REDPOLLS were seen throughout the week at the
CHESPAX office feeders, King's Landing Park, Huntingtown, Calvert Co,
MD.
