We located one Long Eared Owl in an eastern red cedar at Soldiers Delight at about 12:00 noon. It was tucked away in dense branches. We looked long and hard - I was about to give up when Jon called me over. He'd spotted a little piece of bird ... fortunately for us a ray of sun came out and we were able to finally confirm the owl, with its eyes closed and long ears reflecting sunlight.

It's not easy to see - just a few steps in either direction and it was invisible. If there were more owls, (and likely there were) we could not find them.

After, we stopped at Hunt Valley mall. Lots of ring billed gulls, but no black-headed in the mall. Gave up, went to Wendy's where we had to go sit in the parking lot and wait for them to bring our lunch to us. Two gulls flew over, one landed on the light pole in front of us. We were chatting and getting frustrated at the wait. The lone gull kept preening, wagging its tail, and cocking it's head, as if it was looking at us.

So we looked back. It WAS the black-headed gull! I think it likes to be noticed!

Then on to Loch Raven, where we soundly dipped on the Greater White Fronted Geese and the Eurasian Wigeon.

I spent nearly 2 1/2 hours today from 9:00 to 11:30 peering into the now
infamous grove at SD but never located anything. I was also hoping the mixed
pack of crossbills would graze by but no luck.
