Subject: [MDBirding] Valentine poem from a birder

I originally wrote this in 2000, and today seemed like a good time to
post it again (especially since I /did/ get a new bird for my yard list
this morning!):

Attention, please, dear Valentine, here's what I'd like from you:
Now don't be shocked, but dinner out or flowers just won't do.
It's really not enough to send a sentimental card ---
No, what I want are certain birds to show up in my yard.

So could you please arrange a glimpse of, say, a Great Horned Owl,
Or schedule some short visits by exotic waterfowl?
Pine Siskins at the thistle feeder wouldn't be amiss,
And a single Evening Grosbeak would provide me with pure bliss.

A Yellow-headed Blackbird may be kind of hard to find,
But if you send a loon instead, I really wouldn't mind.
And I'll agree to sacrifice a dicky-bird or two,
If you can guarantee for me a Merlin in close view.

So, darling, save the candy hearts or eat them all yourself.
(My kitchen's one where bird books are what's found upon the shelf.)
Stay out of stores, don't send me gifts --- they really won't be missed.
The only thing MY heart desires is more birds for my list!
