Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from February 12, 2013

This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island. The summary of bird
observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps
of Engineers and MD Port Administration, February 2013, Fauna Monitoring
Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar
Island.

A few long-distance north-transients like Tundra Swan, Northern
Gannet and Osprey are beginning to appear at this latitude. During the past
eight weeks the wintering red-wing flock progressed from mostly female and
immature-plumaged individuals to mostly adult-plumaged males 12 days ago.
This census found many of those males now dispersed and singing on
territories.

The high rail/bittern count is attributable to USFWS biologists
reconnoitering muskrat lodges and/or duck habitat census of the 32 acres of
created wetland in Cell 3D. This tally equates to at least two wintering
rails per acre, and that bodes well for project efforts of wetland creation.
