Subject: [MDBirding] Scaup & Bufflehead rafts: Pennyfield Lock & Swains Lk

Hi all,

Today I did a little birding along the C&O and had views of decent rafts of Greater/lesser scaup and Buffleheads. The afternoon light and distance made it tough to discern scaup
species. Also had 2 Common Goldeneye (hen/drake) out in river amist many Ring-billed Gulls. I hiked up to the pipeline cut thru and scoped river from there. A curious Muskrat
(what's with them lately?) was checking me out from the water. Great Blue Herons are coming into bright breeding plumage also.

At Swain's Lock good numbers of Ring-necked Ducks trying to swim upriver. Had 7 Common Mergansers also and a low perched Red-shouldered Hawk late in the afternoon.
