There were 5 bald eagles on the monthly BARC bird walk this past Friday...maybe one of them wandered south...

Also, I had 6 red crossbills at BARC (Beltsville Agricultural Research Center) yesterday, my first day of focused birding since Jan. 1. I went to an area with a lot of pine trees with crossbills in mind and found two within five minutes...found another four about 1 h later...equal number of males and females in both cases...this area is not open to the public but if it was that easy for me to find them, I imagine there should be others around in areas more accessible to the public (at BARC and elsewhere)...also, red-breasted nuthatch and the usual suspects were around (C. chickadee, downy woodpecker, titmice, crows, blue jays, robins).

"Wow, that's a big bird - must be a red-tailed hawk. White head! White tail! OMG it is a bald eagle!" My stream of consciousness looking out at the wood lot behind the house this morning in Cheverly, MD near the intersections of Rt. 202 and the BW Parkway.

I've seen high flyovers of bald eagles from my yard, but this one looked like it was hunting in the woods like a red-tail or Coopers.
