Subject: [MDBirding] Slightly off-topic: cameras for birding

I am looking for an SLR point-and-shoot that has a nice optical zoom and
takes good quality photos of birds. I am wondering if anyone on the list
has experience with such cameras that they would be willing to share with
me. I know that the absolute best way to photo birds is with top quality
equipment, but for right now I am looking for something that can provide
reasonable record shots and a camera that my 10 year old son can use for
his budding interest in wildlife photography.

One camera that I am considering is the Panasonic DMC-FZ150K (Lumix) 12.1
MP 24x optical zoom, so I'll be interested to hear from any one who uses
this camera.

Please respond off-list and I will be happy to summarize the responses for
any one who is interested in the same topic.

Thanks in advance for any replies.
