Pat et al.,

Sorry, I did not provide sufficient info (that's the cost of sending emails too early in the AM). BARC=Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (a USDA Agricultural Research Service facility with limited public access--we will be entering an area not open to the public; I am an employee and am allowed to lead bird walks). As the name suggests, BARC is in Beltsville, which is just north of the Washington Beltway in PG county.

One of the easiest ways to get to the meeting place for the walk, which is just across the street from the forest we will be walking in, is to take the Powder Mill exit West on the BW Parkway (highway 295). Powder Mill Rd is a little bit north of the Beltway exit. Powder Mill Road is initially surrounded by woods but you quickly enter an opening (ag fields on both sides), the road curves right and there is a building complex on your left, close to the road. The parking lot for this building complex (building 426--I'm not sure you can see the number when coming from that direction) is close to the road, also on the left. From the parking lot you will see a water tower across the street in the woods we will be exploring.

There will not be a lot of walking but some of it will be in the woods where there are many fallen trees.

Let me know if you are thinking of coming and have any questions.

Michel

Hi All,

Sorry for the late notification but I will be leading a bird walk at BARC Sunday at 12:30 in search of red crossbills, which I found last weekend in a grove of
pine trees.

We
will meet at the parking lot of building 426, which is along Powder
Mill Road a little bit west of the BW Parkway. Parking lot is south of
Powder Mill Road. We will cross PM Road and walk into the woods there
where I found two small flocks of red crossbills last weekend. If you
arrive late, you should be able to still join us but you will likely
need to leave when I leave at 2:30
or so.
