Subject: [MDBirding] Red Crossbills at Patuxent Wildlife Refuge North Tract this afternoon

The fourth time is a charm but I was certainly helped out by a nice man and his very nice son who called out "RED CROSSBILLS" to me. At about 3:30 the birds were in a field off of the main road opposite the Pine trail and could not be seen from the road. There at least six of them and I got a great view of two males and two females before the flock flew off. They were eating in a tree that was not tall at all. The other two birders had seen 2 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS before I arrived.

Before this I had scoped out Lake Allen and found 80 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 8 MALLARDS, 2 HOODED MERGANSERS and 1 GADWALL.

I also had checked out the TRUMPETER SWAN at the South Tract earlier that afternoon.
