Regarding Tim Carney's concern, "It was insanely windy at Oxbow Lake and the police cars and distant gunshots (?) did not make us any more comfortable birding there."

It is usual for gun shots to be heard on Sundays starting at 12:00 PM. They are coming from the "Turkey Shoot" conducted by the BPO Laurel Elks Lodge 2283, which is located north of Oxbow Lake at 8261 Brock Bridge Road, Laurel MD 20724.

The skeletal remains were found in a very southwestern-most area near the lake's edge, which is not a place where birders most often come to find birds at Oxbow Lake.
