Subject: [MDBirding] Redhead/Harlequin: No & Yes; or; "Serendipity at North Beach"

After not finding the Harlequin at North Beach Tue and y'day, I thought to console myself with the Redhead reported by Joe Hanfman this AM - the only other duck I "need" for Calvert. But search as I might I could find no Redhead, not even among all the Canvasbacks near and far.

But in one last pass thru the nearer group, what should pop out from under the shore-lining docks, but the missing Harlequin- an adult male brilliantly lit up by a chance break in the clouds. I felt like one of those eponymous "7 Princes of Serendip". The Harlequin too far for my camera, at5tached here at least is a consolation Old-squaw from a few days past.

Compared to the past 2 days, the number of ducks is growing rapidly. On Tue AM I counted 600 scaup (most or all Lesser); now, countless thousands. Also greatly up are Golden-eyes, Old-squaws, Horned Grebes. Surf Scoters reamain at about 50. Also present today, a single Red-br Merg and White-w Scoter - both close in. All these of course well north of the pier, seen better from the end of the coast road (Atlantic Ave).
