Subject: [MDBirding] Red Crossbills still at Patuxent North

Jason Berry and I went to Patuxent North Tract this afternoon to look for
Red Crossbills and were successful. We found them about 3:15pm in the same
spot as they have been widely reported: along the road to Lake Allen about
one pulloff to the east of the end of the Pine Trail.

At first we counted perhaps 4 feeding among the cones in the top of a pine
tree, and then convinced ourselves there must surely be 6, and then easily
8 as they went from tree to tree by ones and twos. When they finally took
off altogether towards the east, we counted 15 birds flying out of the tree
we were observing, which were joined by 6 from another tree, for 21 total.
Many more than we thought.

We did not see any white-winged crossbills.

We also stopped by Patuxent South Tract to take some pictures of the
Trumpeter/Trumpling Swan on Cash Lake and were successful getting some
photos of mediocre quality (a bit too far for a DX SLR and 300mm lens).

Good birding,
