This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, March 5, at
11:30 AM.

Top birds this week are WESTERN GREBE* in VA and DC, and BULLOCK'S
ORIOLE* in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, EARED GREBE, GREAT
CORMORANT, hawks, falcons, SANDHILL CRANE, shorebirds, BLACK-HEADED
GULL, DOVEKIE, COMMON MURRE, RAZORBILL, hummingbirds, LARK SPARROW,
WESTERN TANAGER, crossbills, and COMMON REDPOLL.

The WESTERN GREBES* at Lake Anna, Spotsylvania Co VA, were still
present with a report from February 28. A WESTERN GREBE* was also
reported off Hains Point, SW DC on Feb 28; it was not relocated later
in the week.

The immature male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE* visiting a feeder in Harford Co,
MD continued to be seen throughout during the week.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen March 2 at Elkton Marsh, Cecil
Co, MD. One was also seen on February 28 on the north side of MD Rte
297 south of Mary Morris Rd, Rte 213, Chestertown, Kent Co, MD. A
CACKLING GOOSE was found while searching for the ROSS'S GOOSE near
McDonough School, McDonough Rd, Owing's Mill, Baltimore, MD. The
ROSS'S GOOSE was seen in the area throughout the week and, at times,
the school, itself. A ROSS'S GOOSE, possibly the same one at McDonough
School, was seen along Red Run Blvd., Baltimore, MD. A ROSS'S GOOSE
was found March 1 and seen again March 2 and 3 in a field and a pond
along Langhorne Rd in southern Albemarle Co, VA. A CACKLING GOOSE was
seen Feb 28 and March 2 at Hains Point, SW DC. The TRUMPETER SWAN,
possibly some kind of hybrid, continued at Cash Lake, Patuxent
Research Refuge South Tract, Prince Georges Co. MD, this past week. An
immature probable TRUMPETER SWAN was found at Sleepy Creek Lake,
Berkeley County, WV on March 2 and seen again on March 3.

A EURASIAN WIGEON continued to be seen at Pohick Bay Regional Park,
Lorton, Fairfax Co., VA and at Loch Raven Reservoir, Baltimore Co., MD
with the most recent report from both on March 4. The TUFTED DUCK
continues to be seen at Kent Narrows, Queen Anne's Co, MD, with a
report as recently as March 3. A HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen Feb 26 at
Fort Armistead Park, Baltimore, MD. The HARLEQUIN DUCK at North Beach,
Calvert Co, MD was seen on and off all week moving back and forth
between Calvert Co and Anne Arundel Co waters.

The EARED GREBE and GREAT CORMORANT at Indian River Inlet continued to
be seen this past week with a report as recently as March 3.

First-of-season OSPREYS popped up everywhere this past week. A GOLDEN
EAGLE was seen Feb 27 flying over Flint Hill School and Oak Marr Park,
Fairfax Co, VA. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were reported March 2, 3, and 4 in
Highland Co, VA and both a light-phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and several
GOLDEN EAGLES were seen March 2 in the Blue Grass Valley area of
Highland Co, VA. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen March 1 and 2 along Hall
School Rd, Stuart's Draft, Augusta Co, VA.

A PEREGRINE FALCON and a NORTHERN HARRIER were seen March 2 from an
office building in Bailey's Crossroads, Falls Church, VA. Two
PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen flying over the Potomac River about 500
yards downstream from the American Legion Bridge. The PEREGRINE FALCON
along the C&O Canal at Harper's Ferry, Washington Co., MD was seen
again on March 4.

The SANDHILL CRANE in Calvert Co, MD continued to be seen during the
week at Hunting Creek Rd. and Deep Landing Rd in Huntingtown.

PURPLE SANDPIPERS turned up at a number of locations including
Chesapeake Beach, Calvert Co, MD on Feb 28; at the North Beach fishing
pier, Calvert Co, MD on Feb 28; and at Herrington Harbor, Anne Arundel
Co, MD on March 2.

The BLACK-HEADED GULL continued to be seen throughout the week at the
Hunt Valley Towne Centre, Baltimore Co, MD.

The highlights of a pelagic trip in MD waters on the Morningstar on
March 2 included a COMMON MURRE, DOVEKIES, and RAZORBILLS. The
RAZORBILL at Indian River Inlet, DE was seen again March 3. The
highlight of the weekly shorebird/gull survey on March 1 at
Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA was a RAZORBILL on Tom's Cove.

An ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD continued to visit a feeder in Newark, DE.
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS also continued to be seen in the area with one at
Green Spring Garden Park in Alexandria, VA; another in Amberley, Anne
Arundel Co, MD, and another in North Beach, Calvert Co, MD. One was
also seen and photographed March 4 at a feeder on Wilkinson Rd,
Harford Co, MD.

A LARK SPARROW continues to be seen in Chesterfield, VA with the most
recent sighting on March 1.

The WESTERN TANAGER at Settler's Mill, James City, VA continues with a
report as recently as March 1.

Both RED CROSSBILLS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continued to be seen
throughout the week in Maryland in a variety of locations including
the North Tract, Patuxent Research Refuge, Anne Arundel Co, MD;
Resthaven Memorial Garden, Frederick, Frederick Co, MD; Frederick
Community College, Frederick, MD; and Laurel Brook Rd, Harford Co, MD.
A COMMON REDPOLL was still at Chesapeake Landing, Kent Co., MD on
February 26. COMMON REDPOLLS were again seen throughout the week at
the CHESPAX office feeders, King's Landing Park, Huntingtown, Calvert
Co, MD. COMMON REDPOLLS were also seen on March 2 and 4 at Thomas
Point Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD.

records.
