Hi Everybody:
Yesterday (3/5) I led the first of four evening Bird Walks for Montgomery Bird Club. We started at 5 PM on the bridge scanning the Potomac River at Riley's Lock. Straight out from us there was a flock of Tundra Swans on the river. Waterfowl were limited but we saw 6 GADWALL and 2 each of PIED-BILLED GREBES and HORNED GREBES. Down near Violette's Lock there was one SCAUP sp.
We moved on to Hughes Hollow where we had 2 AMERICAN COOTS and 9 RING-NECKED DUCKS in the impoundment closest to the parking lot. Six WOOD DUCKS were seen flying into the impoundments.
We fininished with successful AMERICAN WOODCOCK displays in the fields off of River and Sycamore Landing Roads. We heard our first "Peent" at 6:22 pm and our last one at 6:45 pm. I estimated 4 different birds and there were numerous displays during that time. Some of the group had some very close-up encounters with the woodcocks. While standing in the field we had heard several flocks of TUNDRA SWANS calling as they flew overhead including one distant grouping that I estimated to be about 150.
No Short-eared Owl for our finality like Keith Costley had at Irvine Nature Center last night in Baltimore County. We did settle for a pair of hooting and hollering BARRED OWLS.
