Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from February 25, 2013
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island. The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, February 2013, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
Size of the wintering flock of surface-feeding waterfowl in the area of the island remains about the same while flock species composition varies somewhat, due to different feeding habits and some other matters. Regardless, February predominance is of species like American Black Duck and Northern Pintail. Regional nesting species are coming together. Herring Gull are gathering, giving bellowing calls, all the Canada Geese are in widely separated pairs, many male Red-winged Blackbird are singing on territories, all Killdeer are actively involved in courtship, while recent arrival of crow and grackle may be followed within a few weeks by Double-crested Cormorant, Osprey, American Oystercatcher and Purple Martin. The two pair of bald Eagle have been incubating in nests about 40 days and eggs should hatch soon.
