Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from March 11, 2013
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island. The summary of bird
observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps
of Engineers and MD Port Administration, March 2013, Fauna Monitoring Report
for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
Departure of wintering waterfowl got underway a few weeks ago when
most Tundra Swan left the area. Then came balmy March 10 leading to
departure of thousands of Canada Goose and most remaining Tundra Swan.
North transient duck activity began several days ago and should peak during
the next two weeks. Historic nesting Osprey, Horned Lark and Tree Swallow
have recently arrived within the project site, while Canada Goose, Mallard,
Killdeer, European Starling and Red-winged Blackbird appear largely paired,
defining territories and/or nest sites and should commence nest-building
soon. This census found American Robin for only the second time and Fox
Sparrow for the first time during the past decade.
