Top birds this week are CRESTED CARACARA in DE and BULLOCK'S ORIOLE* in MD.
Other birds of interest include waterfowl, YELLOW-CROWNED HIGHT-HERON, hawks, falcons, SANDHILL CRANE, AMERICAN AVOCET, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, gulls, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, crossbills, and COMMON REDPOLL.
A CRESTED CARACARA was seen in on March 8 and 9 in Ocean View, DE on White's Neck Road next to the Bay Forest community.
The immature male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE* visiting a feeder in Harford Co, MD continued to be seen throughout during the week.
The advent of spring and warmer weather has resulted in the welcoming of many early migrants including sightings of OSPREY, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, WILSON'S SNIPE, PURPLE MARTIN, EASTERN PHOEBE and PINE WARBLER during the week. March 10 and 11 were significant waterfowl migration days with large flights of TUNDRA SWANS and CANADA GEESE seen at many and varied locations.
Two flocks of SNOW GEESE, totaling 90 birds, flew over Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Loudoun Co, VA on March 10. This is an uncommon sighting in the Northern Virginia Piedmont. A ROSS'S GOOSE and a CACKLING GOOSE were seen in the Red Run Blvd. pond, Owings Mills, Baltimore Co, MD on March 9 and 10.
A EURASIAN WIGEON was seen at Pohick Bay Regional Park, Lorton, Fairfax Co., VA on March 9. The EURASIAN WIGEON at Lock Raven Reservoir, Baltimore, MD continued to be seen with reports from March 10 and 11. The TUFTED DUCK continues to be seen at Kent Narrows, Queen Anne's Co, MD, with a report from March 10. A LONG-TAILED DUCK was at Lake Elkhorn, Howard Co., MD on March 10.
A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON has returned to Sligo Creek, Silver Spring, Montgomery Co., MD with a sighting on March 11.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was perched on a dead tree trunk in the woods along Steele Neck Road, Dorchester Co, MD on March 9. A GOLDEN EAGLE and a PEREGRINE FALCON, seen on Strickley Road, Augusta Co, VA were two highlights of a Blue Ridge Young Birders Club trip on March 9. Another GOLDEN EAGLE was at Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Talbot Co, MD seen on March 8, 9 and 10. A GOLDEN EAGLE was at Ft. Smallwood, Anne Arundel Co, MD on March 11. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen on Hall School Road, Augusta Co, VA on March 10. The College Creek Hawkwatch, Williamsburg, VA had their best day on March 9 with a count of 204 distributed across 9 species.
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen in the city of Chincoteague, Accomack Co., VA on March 10. The SANDHILL CRANE in Calvert Co, MD continued to be seen during the week at Hunting Creek Rd. and Deep Landing Rd in Huntingtown. Two SANDHILL CRANES flew over Sycamore Landing Road, Montgomery Co, MD on March 11.
Two AMERICAN AVOCETS were on Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co., on March 11.
AMERICAN WOODCOCKS were reported from many venues during the week, including: the Irvine Nature Center, Baltimore Co, MD; the fields off River and Sycamore Landing Roads, Montgomery Co, MD; the VRE train station in Woodbridge, Prince William Co, VA; Broken Wallet Farm, Washington Co, MD; Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co., VA; Patuxent River Park, North Tract, Anne Arundel Co., MD and the Howard Conservancy, Howard Co, MD.
The BLACK-HEADED GULL continued to be seen throughout the week at the Hunt Valley Towne Centre, Baltimore Co, MD. Its head is beginning to show some black feathering on its way to breeding plumage. An ICELAND GULL was at Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co., MD on March 10.
The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Amberley, Anne Arundel Co, MD continued to be seen during the week. Another RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was on Wilkinson Road, Harford Co., MD, seen on March 9.
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen along Highway 340, south of Merck, Rockingham Co, VA on March 9. Another LAPLAND LONGSPUR was at Harrison Road, Fauquier Co, VA on March 9
An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was at Mt. Calvert, area of Patuxent River Park, Prince George's Co, MD on March 8. Four AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were at Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Talbot Co, MD on March 10.
Both RED CROSSBILLS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continued to be seen throughout the week in Maryland in a variety of locations including a yard in Dry Fork, VA; Patuxent Wildlife Refuge, South Tract, Prince George's Co, MD and the North Tract, Anne Arundel Co, MD; Fort Smallwood, Anne Arundel Co, MD and Soldier's Delight, Baltimore Co, MD.
COMMON REDPOLLS plus a WHIE-WINGED CROSSBILL were seen again at the CHESPAX office feeders, King's Landing Park, Huntingtown, Calvert Co, MD on March 7 and 9.
