One was found on the Seneca, Maryland Christmas Bird Count near Rileys Lock on 12/16/12. What was probably the same bird was reported to eBird 12/4 at Rileys, 12/11, 12/31, and 1/4/13 at nearby Violettes Lock, and 1/9 and 1/10 a little more downstream at Pennyfield Lock. Until Lydias sighting on 3/10, there are no reports since January 10 from this area of Montgomery County or nearby Northern Virginia. There are eBird reports of a single bird in the Arlington, Alexandria, D.C,. area of the Potomac described by Paul below, further downstream from January 1 well into February, so its interesting to speculate whether this is the same bird moving up and down the Potomac.

For the past 2 winters, multiple Great Egrets have wintered in DC and Arlington, between the Theodore Roosevelt Island, Columbia Channel/Marina, Roaches Run, and the Washington Channel. It's hard to know exactly how many there have been, but I would guess 3-5. This is a recent phenomenon, as far as I know. Assuming it continues, I would expect to see continued early arrivals farther up the Potomac.

Lydia,
The previous early arrival record for Montgomery County that I have in my database is March 23. So, yes it is a rare bird for March 11.

I'm posting this because, to my surprise, eBird lists this as "rare." It flew up from the rear of the smaller impoundment, just in front of me, and away to the west.

Otherwise, much as Jan B reported for Hughes on 3/10, minus the kinglets, and the bittern, plus many bluebirds and sparrows--song, swamp, white-throated.
