I was driving eastbound on Cedar Lane, Bethesda, at 11:10 a.m. this morning, and was just crossing the very busy intersection with Wisconsin Avenue when I saw an adult Yellow-crowned Night-heron fly low across the road from north to south, quickly disappearing into a small bunch of trees on the SE corner of the intersection. About 1-1/2 hours later, I was headed home again, and decided to stop in the neighborhood to see if I could find this bird.
I parked on Elmhirst Drive and walked back to the big crossroads, which is currently marked by numerous orange-and-white striped barrels, part of a never-ending State DOT road project. Sure enough, the Night-heron was perched low down in a tiny section of creek between Cedar Lane and the Wisconsin Avenue entrance to Stone Ridge School. It was presumably hunting for food, but this is a rather unhealthy looking piece of stream and flying around here has to be hazardous, because it is just about the busiest traffic intersection in Bethesda.

The area is within 1/4 mile of where YCNH's have nested in the past, on a downstream section of this same small creek.
