Subject: [MDBirding] RBNH and March Potomac RB Gull migration & AOU heads-up/wake up call

MY Red Breasted Nuthatch showed itself again on Friday :) now what are the odds that it will decide to stay & breed - oh wait that takes two :(

I noted 5 [assumed] Ring-billed Gulls in a yard overflight yesterday as well and recalled that this is the appx time when i would see large flocks assembled on the fields on either side of MD 17 (near to US 340) when i would be returning home from work following my MARC rail commute into the Brunswick rail station. This migration was noted in the Stewart & Robbins pub: Birds of MD and the Dictrict of Columbia [North American Fauna #62; pub date 1958; a great historical reference if you can find it]. It's nice to see that some traditions continue. The birds are around for about a week and then...???

I also had a couple of Pileateds calling back and forth in the vicinity today. A forested creek is nearby...

ps Note to AOU: Why is it Ring-billed rather than Ringed-bill? What in the world is a BILLED RING anyway :)
