Subject: [MDBirding] Carroll County waterfowl

Hi everybody:

I spent the morning and early afternoon searching for waterfowl in a number
of places throughout Carroll County. I will post full reports in e-bird
first chance I get. A summary of the highlights of my day follows. As I
previously posted from the field I saw some nice birds at Piney Run Park. I
then checked the wildlife end of the Piney Run Lake, and then made stops at
Study Road pond, Cranberry Reservoir, Union Mills wetlands (off of Brown
Rd.) and finished at the New Widsor wetland area. Excluding the grebes I
saw a total of 16 species of waterfowl.

PINEY RUN PARK: Pied-billed (9) and Horned (19) Grebes...Wood Duck
(9)...Ring-necked duck (20)...LONG-TAILED DUCK (2), one male with a nicely
curved long tail and one female...Common Goldeneye (3)...All three species
of Mergansers...Common (14), Hooded (2) and RED-BREASTED (13)...Ruddy Duck
(6). I also heard a Barred Owl call from the far side of the lake.

Wildlife end of PINEY RUN LAKE: Pied-billed (5) and Horned
(1) Grebes...Black Duck(4)...Wood Duck (2)...Green-winged Teal
(3)...Gadwall (3)...Bufflehead (5)...Hooded Merganser (11). Also had an
Osprey overhead that did some serious hovering but never dropped to the
water.

CRANBERRY RESERVOIR: Wood Duck (3)...Gadwall (3)...Green-winged Teal
(1)...American Wigeon (8)...Ring-necked duck (1)...Bufflehead (1)...Hooded
Merganser (7).

UNION MILL WETLAND (BROWN ROAD): Mallard (80)...Black Duck (2)...Wood Duck
(2)...N. Pintail (2). Most of these ducks flew off in a SW direction and I
believe landed at the pond on Study Road based on what I saw there. I also
saw 7 Swamp Sparrows and 1 Fox Sparrow.

STUDY POND: Mallards (110)...Black Duck (2)...Gadwall (5)...American
Wigeon (11)...N. Pintail (2)...Ring-necked Duck (7)...Lesser Scaup (4).

NEW WINDSOR WETLAND: Mallard (9)...Green-winged Teal (5).....I had a very
brief single glimpse of a smaller duck in thicker vegetation that I thought
may have been a Blue-winged Teal but was not able to verify this. On the
New Windsor treatment plant there were also 3 Lesser Scaup.
