Had a winter plumage EARED GREBE late this afternoon in Chesapeake Beach. Looks to be the first eBird Calvert record since 2011. The location is not easy to describe. It is a small, unnamed park on the Bay that Jeff Culler told me about a couple of weeks ago. It is between 28th and 29th streets on Bayside Road. It is behind an also unnamed gray and red brick store. The bird was about 75 yards out diving actively. Several Horned Grebes in the vicinity also, as well as Long-tailed Ducks and Surf and Black Scoters.
Also birded some in St. Mary's County. Highlights were a PAIR of MERLIN on Longneck Road. First time I have seen more than a single Merlin at a time in Maryland. There were also a couple of WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. At Beauvue Ponds there was a nice selection waterfowl still there that are not too common in the county, including my county close-out GREEN-WINGED TEAL, CANVASBACK, a pair of REDHEADS, GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, LESSER SCAUP.
A cold and gray day, but good to catch a lot of our winter birds before they move on.
Good birding! Jim Moore Rockville
