I was wishing for a few snow flakes, as I spent a couple hours birding at HH. Alas, no flakes, but the variety of birds was pleasing.

Small impoundment

American Coot 2
Ring-necked Duck 12
Pied-billed Grebe 1i

Large impoundment

Ring-necked Duck. 20+
Hooded Merganser 11 (6 drake 5 hen)
Wood Duck 1 pair ( stunning plumage on the drake) and one flushed

Along the road and back along the fields

Song Sparrow
Swamp Sparrow
White-throated sparrow
Eastern Bluebird
White-breasted Nuthatch
Northern Flicker
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Tree Swallow
Carolina Chickadee
Carolina Wren
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Northern Cardinal
Blue Jay
Tufted Titmouse

I flushed about 12 ducks that were on standing water in one of the fields on the right as you walk towards the canal. I could not make a positive I'd of them. Slightly smaller than a mallard. Some white on head. Patterned white areas on body in flight. Besides Teals, what ducks would chose to hang out in a large puddle/ shallow pond in a field?

Stopped at Violettes Lock after leaving HH. I was hoping to see the earlier reported Long-Tailed Duck, but I missed it. There were plenty of DB Cormorants and a few Pied-billed Grebes.
Great day to be outdoors.
