Five of us birded the Kenilworth area today with good success. We arrived shortly after dawn and quickly found the two continuing EASTERN MEADOWLARKS in the first grassy field on the right as you enter the park. (This is the field that borders the track.) Also in this field were at least 3 Savannah Sparrows, the continuing Yellow Palm Warbler, and at least two flyover AMERICAN PIPITS. A little farther along, three WILSON'S SNIPES were found at wet spots in both the short and tall grass. Our search for the American Tree Sparrows ended with only me catching a glimpse of a bird that I felt was this species, though I did not put it on the day list. A few Tree Swallows flew overhead at one point.
At the Aquatic Gardens, one of the highlights was at least 6 singing Fox Sparrows. In addition there were 4 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at the last bench on the right before the boardwalk, two GREEN-WINGED TEALS in the pond at the end, 5 Wood Ducks, an Eastern Phoebe, and several more Tree Swallows.
I then headed to Hain's Point where there are still more than 1700 Lesser Scaup. Other highlights were a large number of Horned Grebes (29), 12 Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, and around 50 Tree Swallows on the Potomac. The Peregrine Falcon was sitting atop the railroad bridge.
