Subject: [MDBirding] Re: Violettes Lock - long-tailed ducks, tundra swans, rusty blackbird

Yesterday at ~11:30am, I went paddling from Rileys Lock to Algonkian RP until 2:30pm. During our paddle upstream, 2 fisherman in (loud) Jon boats were motoring upstream from Violettes Lock, which would explain why we couldn't observe much activity during this time.

There were certainly of a few Horned Grebes in groups of 2-3. In addition, counted a cluster of >12-14 tree swallows zipping around us, along with >300 blackbirds along the MD C&O canal, 6 Horned-Grebes, 3 Black vultures, 1 male bufflehead, 1 osprey, 12 Ring-billed Seagulls flying above, 6 double-crested cormorrants, 1 American coot and 3 Great Blue Herons. At Algonkian, there were 8 Black Crows sp, 2 Eastern Bluebirds, 6 Yellow-rumped warblers by the boat ramp.

Had 51 species for the day including 4 long-tailed ducks in the rapids at Violettes and 6 red-breasted mergansers upstream of Reilly's Lock. Horned grebes were everywhere - 17 total. Common mergansers were on the river at Blockhouse Point. One rusty blackbird was along the shore of the Potomac at Violettes.
