Subject: [MDBirding] Re: Peregrine Falcon over Silver Spring

I may have seen the same bird at about 10:00 am, from my office. I work in a large building on East West Hwy next to the Metro station, and my office faces north. I often see Peregrines in winter as they soar and hunt around Silver Spring in the area around Metro. Lots of pigeons and starlings to keep a peregrine busy. I have worked here for ten years and normally see them through the winter, and to a lesser extent occasionally during spring or fall, and rarely, in summer. Yesterday I saw at least two, one was an adult female and the other I did not see well enough to age or sex, but I think it was a male. Occasionally I see 2 males or 2 females, but have never seen 3 at once here.

Unfortunately they have not nested here (to my knowledge). I've never had an observation of one during breeding season that would meet breeding bird atlas criteria for breeding. I am surprised since the habitat is ideal.

Last week on Thursday I saw a female carry a bird to a building ledge on Colesville road and perch with it, presumably to eat there.
