Subject: [MDBirding] Hughes Hollow this morning

Hi Everybody:

I am at work and only have time for a quick post. I arrived at Hughes
Hollow (part of McKee-Beshers WMA in western Montgomery County) at first
daylight and slowly walked about 1/2 mile in the direction of the C & O
Canal towpath and Potomac River. Between the impoundments and the
partially flooded field mentioned by Jan Braunmiller in her post over the
weekend I saw very good numbers of various waterfowl species. Some were in
the impoundments/flooded field; alot of others were flying around. These
included the following:

1 Black Duck
15 Green-winged Teal
40 Wood Ducks
29 Gadwall
29 American wigeon
9 BLUE-WINGED TEAL

There were also Hooded Mergs and Ring-necked Ducks in the impoundments,
Pied-billed Grebes were calling and an unusual amount of RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS.In a swampy, wooded area beyond the impoundments i came across a
flock of Rusties in the trees and counted 58 with my scope. On the walk
back in the flooded field where I saw alot of the ducks all of the Rusties
were down on the ground feeding at the edge of the water. I CAREFULLY
counted them and totaled 87!

Too bad I had to go to work. Would have beeN nice to stay out longer...
