Top birds this week are: TRUMPETER SWAN, TUFTED DUCK, EARED GREBE, and SANDHILL CRANE in MD, BLACK-TAILED GODWIT in VA, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in VA and MD, CRESTED CARACARA in DE, and BULLOCK'S ORIOLE in MD.
Other birds of interest include: ROSS'S GOOSE, EURASIAN WIGEON, PACIFIC LOON, GREAT EGRET, SNOWY EGRET, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, AMERICAN AVOCET, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, BLACK-HEADED GULL, COMMON RAVEN, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, HOUSE WREN, MARSH WREN, and crossbills.
On the Potomac River, near Violette's Lock on the C&O Canal (Montgomery Co MD), four TRUMPETER SWANS were spotted on March 17. The TUFTED DUCK continues at Kent Narrows (Queen Anne's Co MD), spotted March 17 between Red Eye's Bar and Annie's Seafood Restaurant. An EARED GREBE was found March 17 in Chesapeake Beach MD (Calvert Co), on Bayside Rd between 28th & 29th Streets. The SANDHILL CRANE continues in Calvert Co MD, with a March 17 sighting around Hunting Creek. The BLACK-TAILED GODWIT, apparently refound at Chincoteague NWR (Accomack Co VA) last week, has continued all this week, with sightings and photos through March 17.
Green Spring Gardens Pk (Fairfax Co VA) continues to host the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, seen through March 16, and another RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continued through March 16 at a feeder in Anne Arundel Co MD.
The CRESTED CARACARA discovered recently in Sussex Co DE was seen again March 12 along White's Neck Rd, then again flying over the Liberty Car Wash on Rte 26 in Millville on March 14. The Bullock's Oriole continued to visit feeders in a yard in Harford Co MD through March 17.
Along Public Landing Rd, in Worcester Co MD, a ROSS'S Goose was spotted on March 17. Up to two drake EURASIAN WIGEONS continue at Loch Raven Res, Baltimore Co MD, with sightings on March 14, 16, and 17. Much farther south, in Virginia Beach VA in the Sherwood Lakes Development off Princess Anne Rd, a PACIFIC LOON was discovered on March 14 and seen through the rest of the week.
Early egrets were found in MD: a GREAT EGRET at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, on March 12 & 13, and a SNOWY EGRET March 17 at Public Landing, Worcester Co. Also slightly early were YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS in quite urban area of central MD. One was spotted in Sligo Crk Pk, Montgomery Co, on March 13, another flying over Cedar Ln, Bethesda (also Montgomery Co) on March 16, and a third in Baltimore along Jones Falls Trail on March 16 & 17.
Other early birds included an AMERICAN AVOCET at Truitt's Landing, Worcester Co MD, on March 15, and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, one in Fauquier Co VA along Harrison Rd on March 12, and a second in Charles Co MD, along Rte 231 in Benedict on MARCH 17.
The BLACK-HEADED GULL continued March 14 in Hunt Valley MD (Baltimore Co), and another BLACK-HEADED GULL showed March 17 up near Lapidum Landing in Harford Co MD.
Once again, COMMON RAVENS were widely but sparsely seen in the lowlands. The most extreme location was near the Chesapeake Bay, at the Smithsonian Env Res Cntr in Anne Arundel Co MD, on March 12, but several others were seen. On March 14, a COMMON RAVEN was seen over Demby Dr in Fairfax VA, and another was near Pennyfield Lock of the C&O Canal (Montgomery Co MD) on March 15. Manassas Nat Battlefield Pk (Prince William Co VA) hosted a COMMON RAVEN on March 17, and on the same day, two were seen in Fairfax Co VA.
A few early NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were seen, one March 16 in Cape Charles harbor, Northampton Co VA, another March 17 near Hunting Creek Bridge in Fairfax Co VA, and a third at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co MD, also on March 17. A HOUSE WREN was seen at Cromwell Valley Pk, Baltimore Co MD, on March 13, and on March 17, five MARSH WRENS were present at Deal Island WMA in Somerset Co MD.
Crossbill sightings continue to drop off, but a few are still hanging around. On March 15, a female RED CROSSBILL was seen in Jacksonville MD (Baltimore Co), near the intersection of Manor & Stansbury Mill Rds, and on March 17, a flyover RED CROSSBILL was spotted at the Manassas Battlefield NP. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen also: one at Fort Smallwood Pk (Anne Arundel Co MD) on March 13, another at Lk Fairfax in Reston (Fairfax Co VA) on March 15, three on March 16 in Harford Co MD near the intersection of Pleasantville and Laurel Brook Rds, and nine at Lk Fairfax on March 17.
