I arrived at Hughes Hollow (part of McKee-Beshers WMA in western Montgomery County) at first daylight and slowly walked about 1/2 mile in the direction of the C & O Canal towpath and Potomac River. Between the impoundments and the partially flooded field mentioned by Jan Braunmiller in her post over the weekend I saw very good numbers of various waterfowl species. Some were in the impoundments/flooded field; alot of others were flying around. These included the following:

On the walk back in the flooded field where I saw alot of the ducks all of the Rusties were down on the ground feeding at the edge of the water. I CAREFULLY counted them and totaled 87!
