Hi Everybody:
I led my last MBC evening bird walk this evening once again starting at Riley's Lock AT 5 pm. Highlight here was a single Bonaparte's Gull seen on the water and occasionally flying just above the Violette's Lock rapids. Shared scope views were seen by most. A huge assist for the Bonie goes to Dave Czaplak and Mary Ann Todd who passed on knowledge of this bird to Linda Friedland who stopped their quickly just before joining our group. Other than an occasional flyby Wood Duck we were entertained by a few Horned Grebes in various stages of showing initial breeding plumage. A singing E. Phoebe continued also.
When we arrived at Hughes Hollow the wind was picking up. We saw the usual Ring-necked Ducks, Hooded Mergs, American Wigeon, flyover Gadwall and Wood Ducks. A single drake Green-winged Teal gave most of us brief looks before taking flight. No sign of this morning's Rusty Blackbirds. As we were walking back to our cars one of the group spotted a WILSON'S SNIPE in the impoundment perched on a log just above the water's edge.
We once again finished in a field off of Sycamore Landing and despite the windy conditions were rewarded with successful views and sounds of mating AMER. WOODCOCK display. I estimated 3 birds total with one in close proximity once again giving us 5-6 aerial displays. First Peenting was at 7:40 and last Peenting was at 8:04 PM. As we walked back towards the cars a silent Barred Owl flew low overhead.
