Subject: [MDBirding] Potomac River - DC (Barn Swallow, Pipits)

I did a biking route to several riverfront locations in DC this morning. The highlight was an early BARN SWALLOW at Hain's Point. Although this species showed up around this time last year, eBird shows that this would be the northernmost sighting in North America so far this year (except for one sighting in Ontario).

I did not find any Eared Grebe candidates, although one Horned Grebe in the tidal basin was beginning to molt into breeding plumage and had a dark face and neck, but wrong head shape.

Other highlights included:

Hain's Point:
American Pipit (2)
Northern Rough-winged Swallow (3)
Tree Swallow (4)
Horned Grebe (8)
Merlin (2)
Lesser Scaup (still hundreds)
Ruddy Duck (2)
Red-breasted Merganser (3)
Bufflehead (4)

C&O Canal Trail - Fletcher's Cove:
Red-breasted Merganser (9)
Hooded Merganser (3)
Wood Duck (11)
American Black Duck (1)
Field Sparrow (1, singing)

Georgetown Reservoir:
Common Merganser (1)
Lesser Scaup (4)
Horned Grebe (2)
