Subject: [MDBirding] Violettes To Riley's Lock C&O Towpath and Hughes Hollow

We did not see the variety that Dave Roberts saw yesterday morning, but we were delighted to see the Common Merganser with her 12 chicks. Thanks to Woody and Rae, who spotted them and graciously gave us time on their scope. We all saw up to 3 chicks riding on her back. They were located along the shoreline just before the bridge at Riley's lock. They were headed upstream. The Horned Grebes were in the same area. What a treat!

On the river:

American Coot 8
Pied-billed Grebe 8
Cormorants 10
Horned Grebe 6
Common Merganser hen and 12 chicks

Along the towpath:

White-throated Sparrow
Song Sparrow
Swamp sparrow
White-breasted Nuthatch
Dark-eyed Junco
Eastern Bluebird
Downy Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker
Carolina Chickadee
Great Blue Heron
Tufted Titmouse

Hughes Hollow. ( Tree swallows were abundant )

Small Impoundment

American Coot 1

Large Impundment

Ring-necked Ducks 50+
Hooded Merganser 5 (2 drakes 3 hens)

Along the road

Winter Wren 3
White-throated Sparrow (2 small flocks in the leaves)
White-breasted Nuthatch

Great day to be outdoors!
