Subject: [MDBirding] Good Birds - DC

Hi everyone,

I had a chance to get out and bird around lunch time today and got lucky with a bunch of good birds.

Driving along the Anacostia River (in the Anacostia Park) I saw a little blob on the ground thatcontrastedstrongly with the white snow and had to put the car in reverse until I could get my bins on it. 100 out of 101 times the little blob is just that a stick, or rock, but this time it was an American Woodcock! Drivingfurtherdown the river I spied a swallow feeding off the surface of the river. Turned out to be my FOY Northern Rough-winged Swallow.

Over at Hains Pt. and the Tidal basin I found an American Wigeon threesome on the river, and a lone American Pipit near the tidal basin. The Pipit was walking about on one of (snow-free) the muddy baseball fields.

Running over to Gravely Point resulted in finding two large flocks of American Pipit (50 in total) feeding and flying about the fenced off area near roaches run. One of these flocks "violated DC airspace" by flying out over the mouth of Roaches Run. The final Good Bird was a pair of Blue-winged Teal flying around in the same area.

Overall, a great birding lunch!
