This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, March 26, at 7
AM.

Top birds this week are: COMMON SNIPE* in MD, BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* in
VA, and CRESTED CARACARA* in DE.

Other birds of interest include: ROSS'S GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE,
EURASIAN WIGEON, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE*, PACIFIC LOON*, EARED GREBE,
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, SWALLOW-TAILED KITE, BLACK-HEADED GULL, LITTLE
GULL, ICELAND GULL, SHORT-EARED OWL, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, LAPLAND
LONGSPUR, RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, and COMMON REDPOLL.

A probable COMMON SNIPE* was seen in St Mary's Co, MD on Mar 24. This
Eurasian bird is a closely related cogener of our Wilson's Snipe. The
property owner indicated that he did NOT want birders looking into his
fields. The BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA
continued all this week, with sightings and photos through March 25.
The CRESTED CARACARA* was seen again in Sussex Co, DE along White's
Neck Rd on Mar 20, and near Millville on Mar 23.

Five ROSS'S GEESE were found in a large flock of Snow Geese on Kitts
Hummock Rd, Sussex Co, DE on Mar 24. Six CACKLING GEESE were on
Schoolhouse Pond, Prince Georges Co, MD on Mar 24. EURASIAN WIGEON
were spotted on Loch Raven Reservoir, Baltimore Co, MD through Mar 22.
Another was seen at Chincoteague NWR on Mar 23. The hen BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE* was found again on the Dorchester Co side of the bridge
into Cambridge, MD through Mar 24.

The PACIFIC LOON* in Virginia Beach, VA in the Sherwood Lakes
Development off Princess Anne Rd, was seen through Mar 24. A possible
EARED GREBE was in Washington Channel, Washington, DC on Mar 21.
Another EARED GREBE was seen at Indian River Inlet, Sussex Co, DE on
Mar 23.

As many as 52 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were along the wildlife drive at
Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on Mar 22 and 23.

A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was observed briefly in the Sherwood Lake
development in Virginia Beach on Mar 23.

The BLACK-HEADED GULL at the Hunt Valley Towne Center, Baltimore Co,
MD continued through Mar 25. BLACK-HEADED GULL was also seen at
Chincoteague NWR during the week; at Ted Harvey WMA, Sussex Co, DE on
Mar 24, at Port Deposit, Cecil Co, MD through Mar 23; at Lapidum,
Harford Co, MD on Mar 24; and on Back River at Diamond Point Rd,
Baltimore, MD on Mar 23. LITTLE GULL was seen from Diamond Point Rd on
Mar 20 and 24; at Port Deposit on Mar 19; and at Back River near the
Eastern Av bridge on Mar 24. An ICELAND GULL was found along Fowler
Beach Rd, Sussex Co, DE on Mar 24.

A SHORT-EARED OWL flew over the marsh at Mattaponi Creek, Merkle WMA,
Prince Georges Co, MD on Mar 22.

The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS continued at feeders in Green Springs Garden
Park, Fairfax Co, VA; at Wilkinson Rd, Harford Co, MD; and at
Amberley, Anne Arundel Co, MD.

PINE WARBLERS, PINE SISKINS, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, and RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS were reported across the region.

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen on Bradenbaugh Rd near Harford Creamery Rd
in Harford Co, MD on Mar 25.

Crossbill sightings included two RED CROSSBILLS at Lake Fairfax Park,
Fairfax Co, VA on Mar 22 and twenty at a feeder in Anne Arundel Co, MD
on Mar 24. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in Lake Fairfax Park Mar
20 through 22; in the American University neighborhood, Washington, DC
on Mar 23; and along Rockawalkin Creek, Wicomico Co, MD on Mar 24.
Three COMMON REDPOLLS were seen on private property in Garrett Co, MD
on Mar 20.
