Subject: [MDBirding] Mystery bird (grebe?) at Eastern Neck, Kent county

I was at Eastern Neck NWR yesterday morning and saw what I think was a grebe in the Bay around 11:00 a.m.. I was standing on the main road between the bridge and the parking lot and boardwalk facing the Bay. The winds were vicious and the bird was hard to spot. What I did see was a dark cap, white on the front of the neck and a thin black line down the back of the neck.

After I spotted the grebe through binoculars, it was hard to get on it through the scope as it had gone down by then. My eyes were watering as we were facing that wind. I then thought to try to get a picture but by that time, the bird had disappeared. On the way our of the refuge about 3:00 p.m., I couldn't see this bird at all.

There had been a red-throated loon reported on March 17th but I don't think what I saw was a loon. I hope someone else has better luck.
