Subject: [MDBirding] Patterson Park--raptors on the move

Hi All,

I birded Patterson Park this afternoon (~4:30) and was quite satisfied with the results. Very, very large numbers of sparrows have moved into the Park. Close to 60 DARK-EYED JUNCOS and over 40 SONG SPARROWS were scattered across the fields and wet places near the Boat Lake. The only different one I could find was a FOX SPARROW in the Audubon wetland garden, but there have been Savannahs and Swamps there recently, so I'm sure they're mixed in somewhere. Someone with more patience might have better luck finding them!

There are still a fair number of AMERICAN WIDGEONS and RING-NECKED DUCKS on the lake itself and an adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON has been present for a week now, roosting in the Magnolia trees on the east side of the lake.

The big story though was a steady stream of migrant raptors, all passing relatively high overhead, all heading northeast. It started with a pair of BALD EAGLES, then came a chain of TURKEY VULTURES. After a short lull a RED-TAILED HAWK flew over and then as I was leaving an OSPREY passed by.

Good Birding,

Mike H.
